The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) is forced beyond reasonable doubt to declare the winner of the 2024 general election after a delay in collation and declaration. Although the EC boss does this at the expense of nine constituencies results not being collated.
Mrs. Jean Mensa clarified that the reason for the delay was that the collation process was hampered by the overwhelming number of supporters of political parties at the nine constituency collation centers.
She confirmed, however, that despite the unavailability of those results, the overall outcome of the 2024 presidential election had been determined. The nine constituencies are Awutu Senya East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Akwatia, Suhum, Techiman South, Dome-Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, Ahafo Ano North, and Damango.
"The results from the 267 constituencies, including the newly created one, have conclusively established the winner," she added.
In a direct response to concerns about those results, she said, “Even if all the votes from the nine constituencies (947,000 votes) were added to the candidate who placed second, it would not change the outcome of the election."
Mrs. Mensa told the public that after the commission got the presidential results from the nine unresolved seats, it would update its records. While the situation remains fluid, her remarks were clear in emphasizing that the integrity of the election result remained intact despite the delay.
According to Jean Mensa, the returning officer and chairperson of the EC, Mr. John Mahama obtained 6,328,397 ballots, or 56.55% of the total cast, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), obtained 4,657,304 casting votes, or 41.61%.
The difference between Mr. Mahama's votes and Dr. Bawumia's is 1,671,093.
The total valid votes, according to Jean Mensa, are 11,191,422, with 239,109 rejected ballots. The total votes cast were 11,430,531, whereas the register had a total of 18,774,159. The percentage of voter turnout in the 2024 election stands at 60.9% based on 267 constituencies.
