The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Jean Mensa, has officially declared John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the president-elect in the 2024 general elections.
The former president, Mr. Mahama, won by a wide margin in the nationwide elections that were held on Saturday, December 7.According to the EC chairperson, who's the returning officer, Jean Mensa, Mr. John Mahama polled 6,328,397, representing 56.55%, while the vice president and presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured 4,657,304, representing 41.61%.
She, however, explained that the results were collated from 267 constituencies due to outstanding issues with nine constituencies whose results are yet to come in.
She went on to say that, according to the EC's calculations, John Mahama's victory would remain unchanged if the results of the nine seats, or just over 947,000 votes, were added to the first runner's total.
The difference between Mr. Mahama's votes and Dr. Bawumia's is 1,671,093. The results of the nine constituencies will finally be compiled and added to the results for the commission's record, according to the EC chair.
