Whatever you become good at in the next ten (10) years from now is not a gift but an effect of a discipline you have kept for a long time. Self-discipline, then, is the regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement. Which areas of your life do you seek to develop? It's not going to automatically happen; you need to discipline yourself in order to have it.
To get good grades in school requires a lot of hard work. Sometimes the late nights, the early morning studies, the hunger, and many others are regulations you're imposing on yourself in order to acquire the grades expected. They are the things that a disciplined and diligent student would have to go through to see results. Academic excellence then is not a gift but an effect. Whatever you invest your time and energy into, you become good at.
What do you want to achieve in the next 10 years?
Please note that it is not going to happen in a flash; you must commit yourself to it. When you see a man doing well in any field or at anything, there's a discipline that person is keeping. You can't do what everyone else is doing and expect extraordinary results.
Most of us are lost in the crowd, always wishing for things to happen to us; life doesn't work that way. Even the Son of God, with all his supernatural powers, had to discipline himself to accomplish his purpose. He sometimes stayed all night in the field praying, fasting for 40 days, traveling long distances, and doing many other things. Life honors people who are able to discipline themselves and commit themselves to a course.
In what areas of your life do you need to discipline yourself in order to improve and develop?
- Spiritual life
Life, as we see it, is more spiritual than physical. Make a conscious effort to develop yourself spiritually. Once in a while, don't let your leader in your religious faith tell you to fast and pray. You alone should develop that discipline. Men of spiritual discipline fast and pray many times a year, undergoing several spiritual exercises. These are self-imposed disciplines they impose on themselves in order to develop spiritually.
- Your mental life
- Physical life
Lastly, take good care of yourself. Eat well, exercise, get enough sleep, and once in a while, pamper yourself. Reward yourself when you're done with a difficult task. After executing a difficult project, just go alone to a nice place, get some good food and drink, and then enjoy yourself. Have self-discipline for self-improvement. Discipline is the master key to success.
