The mountain of life; if you find yourself at the top, help others climb. |
In scripture, the Apostle Paul would have never had the impact he did without a man named Barnabas. “When Saul came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus”(Acts 9:26-27).
Barnabas was one of the disciples, He
was in Jesus’ inner circle. But Paul, at the time hated the believers and was
having them thrown into jail. God touched his life and he wanted to go to
Jerusalem and join the other disciples, but they were afraid of him because of
his reputation. Barnabas stood up for Paul and used his influence to open a
door with the other disciples. Paul went on to write ever half of the New
Testament.
We don’t hear a lot about Barnabas, Paul
greatly overshadowed him. But if you were to ask Paul, he would say, “I won
because Barnabas helped me win. I succeeded because Barnabas took a risk and
opened a door that I could not open on my own. Barnabas believed in me when
nobody else did”
Paul and Barnabas (Acts 11:19-30) |
No one climb the ladder of success alone. You need the help of people to win and someone also needs your help one way or the other to make it in life. Human beings are said to be social organisms. We are social organisms because we live by relating, cooperating, growing in groups or society. We are interdependent; reliant on one another.
David rose to become king of Israel
through the love and help of his friend Jonathan, son of King Saul at some
point in time. Jonathan helped him to win. He used his position to help David
escape all the deathtraps set by his father. “Saul told his son Jonathan and
all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of David and
warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your
guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there” (1 Samuel 19:1-2). Such
is the beauty of helping others genuinely.
The story of drug lord Pablo Escobar and
his success in 1970s is incomplete without talking about his cousin Gustavo
Gaviria Rivero who helped him. If Pablo Escober was the syndicate’s charismatic
CEO, Gustavo was its chief operating officer and the “brains of the Cartel”
Peña says. Gustavo Gaviria Rivero developed and controlled the Cartel’s key
smuggling routes- what would be called logistics in the legitimate world of
moving goods around the world. In 1982, when the Bahamian government forced
traffickers off Norman’s cay and South Florida Drug Task Force brought halt to
the Colombia-Bahama-Florida route (a well-known and usual drug smuggling route
for Escobar), it was Gustavo who simply shifted the Medellin supply chain. He
tapped legitimate cargo shipments, replacing the insulation in refrigerators
and insides of TV sets from Panama with cocaine. They also mixed the highly
soluble drug into Guatemalan fruit pulp, Ecuadorian cocoa, Chilean wine and
Peruvian dried fish- which was removed by chemist upon arrival in the United
States. These were ideas of Gustavo Gaviria Rivero that helped the drug
business of Pablo Escobar. Although drug trafficking is an illegal and unsafe
practice that need not to be encouraged, the message in their story is helping
another person to win.
As you journey through life, be willing
to help people who need you on the way. There are people who desperately need
your assistance through your skill, knowledge, act of kindness or influence.
Don’t despise or deny them of your help.
Also, when you receive help from people
do not be ungrateful and turn your back to them. Don’t forget to remember
someone who has helped and show you love. It is wickedness to be ungrateful and
let down on people who helped you when they need you. Don’t point evil finger
on someone who stood up for you. Don’t step in a well you ever drunk from. A popular
Ghanaian actor and celebrity, Kwasi Boadi well known as Akrobeto attributes his
success to the support he had at the beginning from Apostle Kwadwo Safo
Kantanka, a wealthy Ghanaian clergyman whose talent and passion for science and
technology has seen him create fascinating products such as Kantanka
Automobile. According to him, it was Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s council, guidance
and support that helped him in his career decision to be who he is today. He
usually acknowledges and appreciate Apostle Kwadwo Safo on his show, Real Newson United Television (UTV). Be grateful and appreciate people who help you.
