In the year 1665, a great plague hit London. At this period, 22 years old Isaac Newton was studying at Trinity College, Cambridge.
To prevent the contagious disease from spreading further, London city was locked down so Newton's school sent all of it's students home. This plague was to last about a year, so the 22-year-old mathematician was going to be depressed. No! that didn't end up to be the story of Newton because he kept himself busy; busy looking for opportunities right amid the plague.
It was during this terrible season that Isaac Newton wrote the papers that went on to become early calculus and also sprung his theories of optics. It was during this lonely times that Newton propounded the theories of gravity and motion.
Needless to say, without the plague, there might never be Isaac Newton's brand, as we know it today. The young man did not consider the challenging circumstances of his days but pursue the works of his field, operated with passion and has become a generational reference.
The works of Isaac Newton has formed greater portion of mordern theoritical physics. Today, one cannot talk about quantum mechanics, forces and motions without mentioning the name Isaac Newton.
In the book The 100, A Ranking of The Most Influential Persons in History, Michael H. Hart rated Isaac Newton as second most influential person in history before Jesus Christ and after Prophet Muhammed.
He convincingly deserve that position because of his great scientific achievements in optics but most especially in mathematics and mechanics. His major mathematical contribution was his invention of integral calculus. That invention, the most important achievement of morden mathematics, is not merely the seed out of which much of morden mathematical theories have grown, it is also the essential tool without which most of subsequent progress in morden science would have been impossible.
All these accolades and credits due him are as a result of his pursuance of desire in science (that one thing) despite the plague of his days. Such is the fate of a man who decides to pursue his passion, assignment and responsibility (that one thing) of life.
Life has it own ups and downs, and many unforseen activities. As objects of conscience and full of potentials, we wake up every new day to work for ourselves. We set new goals, go on new adventure and are always prepared to make a difference. Nevertheless, challenges and obstacles are bound to come our way.
One's life project can go on halt or become truncated at the expense of unexpected circumstances or plagues. Seasons of trail come to test our faith as to whether one will give up in life or pursue his or her assignment.
You have to constantly inspire yourself that, no matter the circumstances of life, you will pursue that one thing; vision or goal you've set for yourself. Life does not give us what we wish but what we pursue to attain.
In times of plague like that of Newton, what will keep you upward and focus is dedication to purpose and continuous learning. These are the two keys to use to your advantage, overcome circumstances and pursue your goal.
One needs to be highly dedicated to his pursue, what he wants in life in order to see it happen. Without being fully dedicated, any unfavorable circumstance is an excuse to give up. Stars and stewards of every generation are people who were dedicated to their field with an undying quest to solve problem for humanity.
Dedication implies a total commitment. Submitting all yourself to the task ahead of you and giving it what it takes to make it fruitful. Every purpose that will make a great impact in society and become legendary will require strong dedication of the pursuer. Therefore you need to be dedicated to your assignment, give it what it takes to make it happen and be tireless in working at it.
Secondly, continuous learning will keep you motivated on your assignment such that you will not give up no matter the circumstances around you. People who learn, find new ideas to work out the purpose of their life even in the mist of great odds.
Continuous learning fuels a sense of curiosity about the world and it's present challenges, providing a platform for one to navigate through. It is said that what you don't know have the potential to destroy you but what you posses applicable knowledge about cannot harm you.
Knowledge is the vehicle through which every vision is driven to it's accomplishment. What made Isaac Newton exceptional and became a wonder during the Great Plague was his continuous learning. He could spend a whole day in laboratory or his closet, learning, searching and researching on scientific issues that mattered to him.
It takes knowledge to pursue that one thing you desire in life and continuous learning must be a life style of one on a journey to success even in times of difficulty.
No matter the circumstance, do not give up – pursue that one thing. There’s always a way if you have the will.
