Light is an emblem of vision, sight, knowledge and openess. Light is life, it was called forth in the beginning and science refer to it as the start of life.
Jesus Christ, savior and great teacher whoever lived said to his disciples, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid" (Matthew 5:14. NKJV). In this scripture of the Holy Bible, Jesus was refering to men as light of the world.
The word light used here is translated from a Greek word 'phōs' which means to shine or make manifest.
Like the nature of light, man is expected to shine and be an object of illumination to the world. You are the light of the world and you are expected to make manifest of that bightness in you, giving sight to the world.
The world without men will have its full potentials and resources within it untapped. We are here to give life to the earth and make it a better place. Achieving this goal makes us the light of the world.
The natural and great light (sunlight) is the source of energy for all living things and man is supposed to play the same role as the sun to the world. To be the light of the world is to give energy to all men on earth, to make the world experience the light (energy) within you by giving it out.
The Sunlight is a source of energy to all living things 
You're the light of the world and your creator wants you to shine, brighten your space and fill the earth with the glory of your light.
When Jesus Christ walked on the face of the earth, he demonstrated his statement as the light of the world. He made his light shine, made himself significant to the world and till now, he cannot be forgotten.
He once said "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12. NIV). Jesus defined who he is to the world and proved himself by fulfilling his life assignment. And truly anyone who follows him does not live in darkness (what Jesus redeemed men from, sin and death) but have the light of life (living the will of God and having eternal life).
Jesus is a model for mankind, and we're to also be another light of the world just as he was. You must give the world your best, you must set yourself glowing and manifest what you have within from creation to the world.
As light, you must not be hidden and do not let yourself glow dim. In verses 15 and 16 of Matthew chapter 5, Jesus continued to say "Neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a candle stick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your father which is in heaven".
You must not allow the light in you go off because the world needs it. As Jeus said, candles are not put under a bushel, therefore do not let the light in you be hidden.
Put your light on a stage to brighten the world just like candles on their candle sticks to give light to a house.
You become the light of the world by allowing the world to see your good works in you. The statement of Jesus, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works" means that within you is a good work which is your light.
You have a light within you and you must let it shine. There is a knowledge within you, an idea, gift or potential in you that the world must benefit from.
To be the light of the world is allowing the good works within you be known to all men, to utilize the good deeds in you to illuminate the world.
Remember, lights are not produce to benefit the source, therefore the light in you is not for you but for others, let it shine and brighten the world.
You're light of the world, do not let yourself be hidden. Do not look down on yourself and let no man put your light under a bushel. Brighten your home, your community, every corner you find yourself, your country and the world at large.
